Question:

Salam Alaikum, want to know, how to deal with a husband who practices Salah 5 times, but only at home, not in the masjid. A husband who stuck with credit in the bank and most of his salary goes to the bank, and he doesn’t have enough money for things that I need. A husband who never read the Quran, and most of the time spend on Facebook, and all his phone is with haram videos photos, from woman, and dirty jokes, nothing about Islam. He never teaches me about Islam, he doesn’t advise me, he said we don’t need books for Islam we can read on the internet.  He is interested to lose time on the internet and watch videos and he doesn’t even see when the time for Salah is. He doesn’t accept advice easily. And he is Arab and I convert Muslim, I don’t have that knowledge about Islam so much. Please give me advice.

Answer:

The best approach would be to address the above-mentioned issues with wisdom, kindness and compassion. Confrontation and hostility need to be avoided.

Other methods would also include education and creating awareness in the home environment about the consequences of such actions. Again this should be done with kindness.

A final method is to ‘live by example’. By demonstrating good character and engagement in the worship of Allah, it will serve as a means of encouragement for those around us.

Al-Hasan Al-Basri has stated: Advise the people with your actions and do not advise them with our speech.[1]

In the above statement Al-Hasan Al-Basri (may Allah have mercy upon him) has taught us the importance of advice through our actions more so than verbal advice.
