Question

Salam,

Is there anything written on imposing monetary punishment on disobedient students?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

Answer:

The Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah invite humanity towards a role model lifestyle for all generations. It is proven that positivity and motivation has a better impact on students than imposing various forms of disciplinary punishments. Below are some steps which can be applied for students who have behavioural problems:

 

  1. A telling-off

However, this must be presented in an effective manner which caters for the individual student. [Surah Nahl 125]

 

  1. Sending a letter home

 

  1. Removal from a class or group

 

  1. Confiscating something inappropriate for the institution, e.g. mobile phone.

This is known as negative reinforcement. This must also be balanced by praises and awards for any form of achievements. [Abu Dawud 4681]

 

  1. Detention

 

You may ask one of them to come up to the front and recite some Quran to begin classes. Give them recognition. This way Allah will bless the process and they will want to listen to each other and to you.
