Is it haram to be an organ donor and why?

A general conclusion from The International Islamic Fiqh Council from 1998, is that it would be permissible to do organ donation but meeting certain conditions. It would be permissible to receive from a donor after their death if it was a matter of life or death for the patient and there was no other solution.
In terms of donating your own organs, precaution needs to be taken because as Muslims we need to stay away from doubtful matters, and also due to the big differences in opinion.
I would advise that donating that which can be donated while alive, such as blood or part of an organ which if given doesn’t cause death or harm your own life, such as one kidney or skin, is permitted. However, one should give greater precaution in donating organs that life relies on upon and donation after death.
