Question:
Is it permissible to read Qur’an where music is being played? I was in a room reading Quran and music was played.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Qur’an is the speech of our Creator and hence it requires from our side to show utmost respect to it. We are told in the Quran in Surah A’raaf nr 7 verse nr 204;
{وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ فَٱسۡتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ}
When the Qur’ān is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may be blessed.
In Tafseer Ibn Katheer under this verse, he mentions that Hassan Basri (rahimahullah) said when you sit for the Quran (ie at a gathering where Quran is being recited) then remain quiet.
Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) mentions in his book at-Tibyaan page 96;
“It’s incumbent on those who are present in the gatherings of recitation (of the Quran) that when they see any munkar (ie evil) that has been mentioned before or other evil besides them, that they prohibit it as much as they are capable of, with the hand if they are able to, and with the tongue for the one who is unable to do it with the hand, and if even that is not possible then he should believe it to be a sin in his heart, and Allah knows best”.
If you are reciting the Qur’an in a room where music is being played then its best that you move away from such a place and recite it in another room. If that is not possible then you should ask the person playing the music to keep the music down as it is disturbing your worship, this is especially if the person playing the music is a Muslim, as he/she should know that it’s haram to listen to music.
