Question:

Assalamu alaikum, I know that mocking ALLAH, his messengers, Islam and angels are all Disbelief. But I want to know a ruling about mocking Shaytan and making fun of him not with the intention to Mock Shariah but to make fun of Shaytan as he is our enemy and misguides us. Does it constitute disbelief and mocking religion? Also if someone mocks any Jinn not with the intention of mocking religion but just to make fun of the Jinn. Is this constitute disbelief?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

We can conclude that there are two definitions of the word “mock” (as a verb). And similar definitions are found in various versions as well e.g. Oxford, Collins etc. If someone mocks you:

1) They show or think you are foolish and inferior. (Serious)

2) They say something funny about you or imitate your behaviour. (Joke)

The first definition is what you are talking about when referring to mocking the shaytan as the second one can’t genuinely be done.

Taking the first definition into consideration, yes you can mock Shaytan as he is considered foolish (he is unwise/idiotic/ill-considered in Islam etc. as his goals are to bring evil into humanity and whisper wicked thoughts into humans)

Allah mentions in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّۭ فَٱتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا ۚ إِنَّمَا يَدْعُوا۟ حِزْبَهُۥ لِيَكُونُوا۟ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ

Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you; so take him as an enemy. He only invites his party to be among the companions of the Blaze. [Surah Faatir verse 6]

And he the Shaytaan, is inferior to the Muslim person as Allah SWT has promised him Jahannam and the Muslims with sincere faith and adherence to commands jannah. Allah shows that the Shaytaan is inferior by cursing him in the Qur’an:

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ

And when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast (rejected one). [Surah Nahl verse 98]

So mocking Shaytan or his jinns does not mean you have committed disbelief.

Only Allah knows best.
