Question:

Assalamualaikum. I’m a patient of ocd. I have a bad habit of masturbation. A few days before i masturbated (i regret that) and then after 30 min i urinated and then went for bathing when i was bathing i had a sensation and feeling in my private part that maybe I leaked a urine drops (i have this sensation many times when bathing). I dont know really if i had leaked a urine drop or not. Then after bathing when i had a towel wrapped in my body i had a very strong feeling and sensation like feeling hot in and around private part and don’t know really if it is of urine drops or water that is in my body. When I looked at the towel after that I see wetness as my body is not dry and I don’t know what this wetness is of because i did not dry my body after bathing. I don’t know if that water was of body or of urine drops because I had a very strong sensation. I don’t know if it was waswas or not now I’m getting thought that everything in my house is impure. Because maybe i actually leaked urine.But I’m not sure about that. I’m very depressed about that.Is everything impure like towel etc?

Note that i don’t know if that wetness is of urine or body’s water. I’m getting a doubts that what if it is really urine drops. I’m getting thoughts that because I masturbated the drops of urine is because of that I don’t know what to do.  And what if the urine drops are actually leaked (I dont know about that) are everything impure? I had use the same towel without washing many times is everything impure? I had also same feelings and situation many times after masturbation.

Answer:

OCD

First of all, it is crucial as with all things that we make Dua and beseech Allāh Ta’ālā for His assistance in alleviating our hardships and difficulties.

Secondly, it is imperative that you seek medical assistance from experts in the field.

Every difficulty and illness that we go through are all tests from Allāh Ta’ālā. Allāh Ta’ālā informs us;

“We shall surely test you with fear and hunger, loss of property, lives and crops; but give glad tidings to those who have fortitude. Who, when struck by misfortune, says: ‘We belong to Allāh, and surely to Him we shall return.’” [Surah al-Baqarah; 2:155-156] [1]

“He Who created Death and Life, that He may test which of you is best in worship: and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.” [Surah al-Mulk; 67:2] [2]

However, regardless of whatever difficulties we are going through we should never become despondent in the mercy of Allāh. Allāh Ta’ālā forgives all sins (big or small). [Surah az-Zumar; 39:53] [3]

Allāh Ta’ālā reminds us that He does not burden us with any trial greater than that which we can bare. [Surah al-Baqarah; 2:286] [4]

Whatever troubles we go through, Allāh Ta’ālā has specifically chosen to test us with these because Allāh Ta’ālā knows that we can handle it and through these hardships, Allāh Ta’ālā wants to give us the opportunity to turn back to Him and draw nearer to him.

Allāh Ta’ālā says that with every hardship comes two sets of ease. [Surah al-Sharh; 94:5-6] [5]

The Prophet ﷺ said: “No calamity befalls a Muslim but Allāh expiates some of his sins because of it…” [Sāhīh al-Bukhari: Hadith 5640] [6]

Advice

You can read Ta’aw’wuz (أَعّوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْم) and the Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nās (Surahs 113-114) to assist you against the whispers of shaytān.

“While I was travelling with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ between al-Juhfah and al-Abwa’, a wind and intense darkness enveloped us, whereupon the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ began to seek refuge in Allāh, reciting: “I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn,” and “I seek refuge in the Lord of men.”

He then said: Uqbah, use them when seeking refuge in Allāh, for no one can use anything to compare with them for the purpose.” [Sunan Abī Dāwūd: Hadith 1463] [7]

“Narrated Sulaiman bin Surd: While I was sitting in the company of the Prophet ﷺ, two men abused each other and the face of one of them became red with anger, and his jugular veins swelled (i.e., he became furious). On that the Prophet ﷺ said: “I know a word, the saying of which will cause him to relax, if he does say it. If he says: “I seek Refuge with Allāh from Satan” (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ) then all is anger will go away.”” [Sāhīh al-Bukhārī: Hadith 3282] [8]

You can also attempt to set yourselves time limits and restrictions in your actions so to not spend excessive amounts of time doing the same task or continuously washing yourself.

Masturbating

Masturbation is a major sin. Only through sincere repentance and Taubah can one truly atone for their sins.

There are three conditions to repenting;

  • Stop committing the sin;
  • Feel remorse for the sin which has have been committed;
  • Make a sincere vow to never return back to the sin.

The Prophet ﷺ has taught us how to manage in such situations when our desires become very strong. He advised that if one is financially able, then he should marry as that will help protect his eyes and preserve his chastity. Those who cannot afford to marry should fast as that helps to quash one’s desires. [Sāhīh al-Muslim: Hadith 1400] [9]

The best advice I can give is to act upon the following Hadith. If you find yourself going close to the sin again then do as the Messenger ﷺ advised: “Frequently remember the destroyer of pleasures,” meaning death. [Sunan Ibn Majah; Hadith 4258] [10]

At the time of drawing close to the sin, try to remind yourself, what if I die right now? In what state will I return back to my Lord?

Istibrā’

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ passed by one of the gardens of Makkah or Madinah and heard the sound of two men being tormented in their graves. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “They are being punished. However, they are not being punished for anything that was difficult to avoid.” Then He ﷺ said: “Indeed, one of them did not used to take care to avoid getting urine on his body or clothes, and the other used to walk around spreading gossip.” Then He called for a palm stalk which He broke in two and placed a piece of it on each grave. It was then said to Him: “O Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, why did you do that?” He ﷺ said: “May (the punishment) be reduced for them so long as this does not dry out” or: “until this dries out.” [Sunan An-Nasā’i; Hadith 2068] [11]

Allāh Ta’ālā commands: “purify your clothes.” [Surah Al-Mudath’thir; 74:4] [12]

Any impurity which comes onto the body or clothes must be washed off and cleaned as soon as possible. Cleanliness is a crucial part of our beliefs. There are numerous narrations emphasizing the extreme importance behind keeping the body and our clothes clean at all times. The Hadith above is only one example showing the severity for the one who is careless in this regard. Any amount small or big should be washed and cleaned.

Many measures can be taken to ensure that no excess drops exit the urethra after completing urination. For instance; the index and middle fingers of the left hand can be placed under the scrotum and then gentle pressure applied in a dragging motion forward towards the tip. This will allow any remaining drops to exit. A piece of tissue can also be held on the tip and gently squeezed with the left hand to bring out any remaining drops. Alternatively, one can try coughing or holding a piece of tissue on the tip and taking 40 steps within the confines of the toilet. All these measures can be taken prior to pouring water.

Due to the potential difficulty that this may cause, a slight allowance has been provided. This allowance is what you have enquired about. It must be emphasised, that even with this allowance being there, the preferred and recommended step is to wash away the impurities. If drops of urine still persist after all of these measures have been taken then; if the amount of urine exiting is below the size of a Dirham then it will be Makrooh to perform Salah in this state but the Salah will be valid. Anything in excess of this amount will nullify one’s Salah and cleaning/washing will be required before the Salah is performed.

Dirham and Dinar were the currency of the time. They were gold and silver coins. The approximate equivalent to a Dirham today would be a 50p coin. Coins of that time were not like the coins of today, where every coin is minted in an identical manner to the next. Coins use to vary in size, thickness, purity and etc. Hence, there are slight variations in the sizes. Thus, the 50p coin is a sufficient equivalent for us to base this amount on.

Summary

Try your best to stop masturbating. If you are able to marry, then marry. Otherwise fast regularly to quash your desires.

Do Istibrā’ after urinating to clear away any remaining drops from the urethra.

Sprinkle water on your trousers after doing this to remove any further doubts.
