Question

Respected Mufti Saab, I've been troubled by a masala recently and would hope Mufti Saab can assist me.

I have heard that it is a شرط in salaah that the feet have to have direct contact with/touch the ground, is this found in any kitaab and if so would salaah with boots, therefore, be permissible?

If there are no such شرط like that which would mean that salaah with boots is permissible, then according to the Hanafi مذهب there has to be اتصال, so would اتصال be found with the boots on or not?

Answer:

It is not a condition to pray barefooted, as it has been narrated from many ahadith that the Prophet (PBUH) would pray with both khuffs and shoes on.

Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu'ba:

I helped the Prophet (SAW) in performing ablution and he passed his wet hands over his Khuffs and prayed. [1]

Narrated Abu Maslama:

Sa`id bin Yazid Al-Azdi: I asked Anas bin Malik whether the Prophet (SAW) had ever, prayed with his shoes on. He replied "Yes." [2]

Narrated Aws ibn Thabit al-Ansari:

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: Act differently from the Jews, for they do not pray in their sandals or their shoes.[3]

In Raddul Muhtaar, it is mentioned that it is preferred to pray in sandals, to differ from the Jews.[4]

The feet must be connected to the ground, whether in shoes or otherwise because this is a fardh aspect of sajdah.[5]
