Question:

As-Salamu Alaykum,

After one has woken up and finds there is sticky fluid that comes out of the male private area, so one first urinates and then goes to wash the area, could you kindly explain what washing is sufficient for the area to be clean? Could he just pour water over the area 3 times without touching it, or would he use a finger to rub away any substance whilst pouring water over it?

Secondly, if he does use a finger to rub away any substance and then finds that if he presses a tissue on the area, it appears that some water got inside the private area, would this water that now comes out break Wudu and be classed as impure?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

In the Hanafi madhab, what is compulsory is to remove the impure (najis) substance from your body.

Some impurities such as urine are watery and not sticky/viscous. These impurities can be removed by simply pouring water over the area of your body that is affected by the impurity.

However, seminal fluid (Mani) can be thick and can stick to your body, such that when you pour water over it, the sliminess of the impurity remains on your body. In this case, you must rub the impurity off your body; otherwise, it is very difficult to completely remove such a sticky substance. You can wipe off the impurity with a tissue before washing. Then you can easily purify that part of the body by simply pouring water over the affected area. This also reduces your water usage.

Semen can also dry if not washed away promptly. Thus, you may need to scratch it off in order to remove the impure substance. In such a case, you do not need to wash the affected area of your body after scratching off the semen.

You do not need to rub so aggressively that water enters your private part. Again, if you use a tissue to wipe the impurity from the opening of your urethra, there is no need to rub with your finger. Nor is there a need to open the urethra and rub the inside. The inside of the urethra does not need to be purified.

The male urethra is very narrow, and there is no opening for the water to trickle deep inside your urethra. For this reason, water may enter inside the opening of the hole, but it will not penetrate much deeper than that. Thus, when the water trickles back out of the opening, it will be deemed as pure and will not break your Wudu.

Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
