Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

I am writing to you because I'm in a medical school in Denmark and I've reached a point where I have to start thinking about what I want to specialise in. I want to know from an Islamic point of view what speciality you find most beneficial to Muslims. A lot of Muslim choose classical field ophthalmologist cardiologists etc.

From working with Muslim and from an Islamic point of view what speciality would you recommend?

I know there is a lack of psychiatrists within the Muslim world and I have thought about choosing psychiatry, but I want to hear your thoughts

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

  1. Your intention and concern of being a benefit to the Muslim community are commendable, may Allāh SWT reward you immensely. Our recommendation will be to choose a specialization which is best suited to your talents and passion, as this will help you reach personal excellence (isān) in your career. It has been reported that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu 'alayhiwasallamhas said: "Verily, Allah has enjoined excellence (ihsan) with regard to everything. So, when you kill, kill in a good way; when you slaughter, slaughter in a good way; so every one of you should sharpen his knife, and let the slaughtered animal die comfortably." [Muslim]

Therefore we hope you aim to achieve this isān, in your career and elsewhere, no matter what specialization you choose. We would also ask you to refrain from gender-specific specializations regarding the opposite sex (i.e. gynaecology for men etc.)

Only Allah SWT alone knows best.
