Question:

Is playing cricket professional halal? As it doesn’t include any gambling and cricketers get paid by advertisements earnings and by fatwa by Jamia Tur Rasheed advertisements earnings like YouTube are halal.

And why do some scholars say it haram simply because it is sports and playing sports is haram.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Answer:

Playing sport is not Haraam. It is important to exercise and train your body. What is impermissible in certain professional sports is wearing clothing which exposes the Awrah, such as exposing the knees, being unable to pray Salah on time due to match timings or being prevented from fasting during Ramadhan [1].

The clothing worn by professional cricket players is generally acceptable, covering everything from the navel to below the knees. However, one seeking to become a cricket player will have to ensure that they will not be prevented from performing a single Fardh Salah at its correct time throughout the year, nor prevented from fasting during Ramadhan.

As long as these conditions are met and the other rules and restrictions of Islam are upheld, there should be no problem being a professional cricketer.
