Question:

I would like to know if non porcine tanned leather regardless of slaughtering method is permissible to use for drinking water out of or eating food on?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The permissibility of using non-porcine tanned leather regardless of the slaughtering method depends on the type of animal from which the leather is derived.

Leather sourced from animals whose meat is halal to consume, such as cows, goats, sheep, and camels, is considered pure and permissible to use, even if the animal was not slaughtered in the prescribed Islamic manner. This is because the leather of these animals becomes pure through the tanning process.

Leather obtained from animals whose meat is haram to consume, such as pigs, dogs, and other carnivorous animals, is considered impure (Najis) in the Hanafi school. Even if the leather is tanned, it does not become pure, and its use is impermissible.

If the leather is from an animal whose meat is halal to consume and the tanning process has been properly carried out, it is permissible to use for items such as drinking vessels or eating utensils. However, if the leather is from an animal whose meat is haram to consume, even if the tanning process has been applied, its use remains impermissible.

The permissibility of using non-porcine tanned leather for drinking or eating utensils in the Hanafi school hinges on the source animal’s dietary permissibility. Leather from halal animals is permissible, while leather from haram animals remains impermissible, regardless of the tanning process.
