Question:
I am a student from Bangladesh. I have studied A lvls and got very good grades in science. However, I couldn’t get into a public university in a science subject due to syllabus differences. I did however get into bba.
However, my passion for science makes me want to pursue it. I know if I apply abroad, I would get great scholarships and opportunities, but I am unsure whether if it would be good otherwise due to the culture there and fitna of drugs alcohol etc. Moreover, I am worried if bba will lead to haram jobs that may include riba.
There is also the fact that my parents are getting old. My dad and mom are 60 and 56 and I can already see the waning signs that come with age. I do have an elder sister and brother but my sister is 29 and still unmarried and has been taking care of them since long and my brother is frankly troublesome. I am unsure of what to pursue.
Please guide me both in terms of permissibility and reward as everyone around me keeps urging me to do what I think is best for me.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In this situation you would have to assess and see to all the possibilities that you have locally within your area in Bangladesh.
Given that your parents are elderly, and your sister remains unmarried alongside a male sibling who is troublesome, it is more prudent and wiser to remain close to them as this is more rewarding and will bring about the mercy of Allah ﷻ.[1]
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (ra) reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking permission to strive in the cause of Allah ﷻ. The Prophet ﷺ replied by asking: ‘’Are your parents alive?’’ The man said yes. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Then strive in their service.”— [صحيح البخاري، رقم الحديث: ٢٨٤٢]
Regarding permissibility, it would be permissible for you to apply abroad and study there should you get acceptance and a visa.
Nevertheless, like mentioned earlier, it would be more rewarding and better if you, for the sake of your parents, were to stay and excel in your studies locally and thereafter seek employment in Bangladesh.
I would advise that you seek further consultation from the elders in your family such as your aunts and uncles regarding this matter—though the final decision would ultimately rest with you.
