Question:
I’ve recently been trying to quit sugar, and am finding that reading up on sugar, and its addictive qualities, is more helpful than reading Quranic ayats about food. I’ve been learning a lot about addiction and have been able to unpick unhelpful thought processes in my head.
Is this a bad sign, do I have weak faith? Shaytaan is tricking me into thinking that I’m getting more benefit from the secular book. I know it’s not true, I know the secular book is just an enabler of the Quran’s message (avoid harmful foods) but I’m not sure whether I should “need” the secular book. It feels like I should only need the Quran to get me off of sugar and that’s it. Is my understanding correct or have I gone too far?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Knowledge that is beneficial can be taken from other than the Quran and Hadith. It will not be considered as weak Imaan if a person learns from other books besides the Quran.
But it should not be in unconformity of the shariah and it should not have doubtful matters in it where it can affect a person’s mindset and thinking.
However, one should give preference to the Quran and have more conviction in the words of Allah and in the Ahadith.
Health is a great blessing of Allah which a person doesn’t value. In the hadith it is mentioned: ‘Two blessings which many people squander: Good health and free time.’
It is also mentioned in a hadith: ‘Your body has a right upon you.’
Therefore it is very important that we adopt moderation and be balanced in our diet. We should not harm our body rather we should be careful.
Whatever the case may be, you can navigate through the Quran, the Ahadith as well as other books to get a better understanding of the matter and that which can help you to stop it.
Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
