Question:

 

I took off my retainer and it had saliva on it. Then I put it back in my mouth and eventually swallowed that saliva while I was fasting.

 

Will this break my fast?

 

Hence does breaking fast due to ignorance of a ruling actually break it?

 

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

Answer:

 

In the aforementioned scenario, the fast becomes invalid and Qadha (make-up fast) will be necessary. (1)

 

Eating and drinking forgetfully while fasting will not invalidate your fast, but doing the same acts due to ignorance will invalidate it. (2)

(1)وإن ابتلع بزاق نفسه من يده فسد صومه، ولا تلزمه الكفارة كذا في الوجيز للكردري

ولو سال لعابه من فيه إلى ذقنه من غير أن ينقطع من داخل فمه ثم رده إلى فيه وابتلعه لا يفطره؛ لأنه لا يتم الخروج بخلاف ما إذا انقطع كذا في الظهيرية في المقطعات.
