Asalaam Alaikum. I have a question please. I am currently in Madinah and I have started my period (early). I had booked a Rawdah slot later in the night… I have had a terrible 2024 and I was hoping at the turn of the year I’d get to be in Rawdah (I know it’s the Gregorian calendar but it was for my mental health – fresh starts, etc.). Am I allowed to enter the Rawdah and sit and do Zikr and dua, please? The internet is showing conflicting information… Some saying no… Some saying yes to Rawdah only as it’s considered a graveyard (although inside the masjid). I’m sorry in advance if my question is silly, but I even cried to get this slot at Rawdah.

Answer:
Wa alaikumus salaam,
It is indeed a sad state to be blessed with the opportunity of Umrah, only for a woman to experience her haidh (menstruation). However, this is the decision of Allah, the Most Wise. We should remember the incident of Aisha (RA), who experienced haidh during Hajj and became upset. Nabi (saw) consoled her and said: “Verily, this is a matter Allah has written upon the daughters of Adam (peace be upon him). Do all the actions of the pilgrimage except the tawaf.”
Similarly, regarding the visit to the Rawdah, a woman will not be allowed to enter in the state of haidh. However, she can be in the courtyard, engaging in durood (sending blessings on the Prophet) and dua (supplication). If she enters the Rawdah while in a state of menstruation, she will be sinful and will need to repent sincerely.
That said, actions are judged by intentions. You made a great effort to secure your slot, and certainly, Allah will reward you even though you are not able to enter the Rawdah physically.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَحَاضَتْ بِسَرِفَ، قَبْلَ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ مَكَّةَ وَهْىَ تَبْكِي فَقَالَ ” مَا لَكِ أَنَفِسْتِ ”. قَالَتْ نَعَمْ. قَالَ ” إِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ، فَاقْضِي مَا يَقْضِي الْحَاجُّ غَيْرَ أَنْ لاَ تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ ”. فَلَمَّا كُنَّا بِمِنًى أُتِيتُ بِلَحْمِ بَقَرٍ، فَقُلْتُ مَا هَذَا قَالُوا ضَحَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنْ أَزْوَاجِهِ بِالْبَقَرِ.
Sahih Muslim, Hadith 131:
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِيمَا يَرْوِي عَنْ رَبِّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَالَ “ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَتَبَ الْحَسَنَاتِ وَالسَّيِّئَاتِ ثُمَّ بَيَّنَ ذَلِكَ فَمَنْ هَمَّ بِحَسَنَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا كَتَبَهَا اللَّهُ عِنْدَهُ حَسَنَةً كَامِلَةً وَإِنْ هَمَّ بِهَا فَعَمِلَهَا كَتَبَهَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عِنْدَهُ عَشَرَ حَسَنَاتٍ إِلَى سَبْعِمِائَةِ ضِعْفٍ إِلَى أَضْعَافٍ كَثِيرَةٍ وَإِنْ هَمَّ بِسَيِّئَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا كَتَبَهَا اللَّهُ عِنْدَهُ حَسَنَةً كَامِلَةً وَإِنْ هَمَّ بِهَا فَعَمِلَهَا كَتَبَهَا اللَّهُ سَيِّئَةً وَاحِدَةً ”
Fatwa Reference:
وَأَمَّا فِي جَوَازِ دُخُولِ الْحَائِضِ فَلَيْسَ لِلْفِنَاءِ حُكْمُ الْمَسْجِدِ فِيهِ، وَأَمَّا مَا فِي شَرْحِ الزَّاهِدِيِّ مِنْ أَنَّ سَطْحَ الْمَسْجِدِ وَظُلَّةَ بَابِهِ فِي حُكْمِهِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَى إطْلَاقِهِ بَلْ مُقَيَّدٌ فِي الظُّلَّةِ بِأَنَّهَا حُكْمُهُ فِي حَقِّ جَوَازِ الِاقْتِدَاءِ لَا فِي حُرْمَةِ الدُّخُولِ لِلْجُنُبِ وَالْحَائِضِ كَمَا لَا يَخْفَى وَقَيَّدَ صَاحِبُ الدُّرَرِ وَالْغُرَرِ الْمَنْعَ مِنْ دُخُولِهَا الْمَسْجِدَ بِأَنْ لَا يَكُونَ عَنْ ضَرُورَةٍ فَقَالَ وَحَرُمَ عَلَى الْجُنُبِ دُخُولُ الْمَسْجِدِ وَلَوْ لِلْعُبُورِ إلَّا لِضَرُورَةٍ كَأَنْ يَكُونَ بَابُ بَيْتِهِ إلَى الْمَسْجِدِ اهـ
