Question:
Assalamu alaikum shuyookh

Why should we recite Surah Kahf on Friday? Is there any hikmah?

Someone asked

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Surah Kahf itself is a beautiful surah with many valuable and moral lessons to be learnt from, when one ponders over the transaction and knows the story behind the Surah, such as:

The Trial of Faith (The Story of the People of the Cave) – Teaches steadfastness in dīn amidst societal pressure.

The Trial of Wealth (The Parable of the Two Men and Their Gardens) – Warns against arrogance and ingratitude.

The Trial of Knowledge (The Story of Musa) – Demonstrates the limits of human understanding and submission to Allah’s wisdom.

The Trial of Power (The Story of Dhul-Qarnayn) – Shows how power should be used justly and for the sake of Allah.

As for the virtues of Surah Kahf to be read on Jummah:[1]

It is reported on the authority of Abī Sa’īd al-Khudrī, that he said:
“Whoever reads Sūrah al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).”

One of the many virtues that have been mentioned is the safeguard from Dajjal:[2]

Abu al-Darda’ reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying:
“If anyone memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surat al-Kahf, he will be protected from the trial of Dajjal (Antichrist).”

Abu Dawud said: In this way Hashim al-Dastawa’i transmitted it from Qatada, but he said:
“If anyone memorizes the closing verses of Surat al-Kahf.” Shu‘bah narrated from Qatadah the words: “from the end of al-Kahf.”

Therefore, the practice of reciting Surah al-Kahf on Fridays is a means of seeking divine guidance, protection, and spiritual renewal. It serves as a reminder of the trials of life and the importance of remaining steadfast in faith. Thus, it is highly recommended for every believer to adopt this Sunnah consistently.

I hope that this answers the question.

Only Allah knows best.
