Question:

Assalamualaikum I broke a fast deliberately many years back. I was very thirsty, not so much so as to cause genuine bodily harm but serious enough that I Might have been close to fainting, though probably not. Does this qualify as a valid excuse or do I have to make kaffara? Note; I normally have no major problems in fasting, so if I broke my fast I must have been feeling pretty thirsty. But I did feed 60 people twice some years after that, which I obviously did because I felt my excuse was not serious enough. Now what to do?

 Answer:

Bismillah

If a person whilst fasting fears that if he does not eat or drink anything his life may be at risk or there is a chance that he may faint or become unconscious is allowed to break the fast and do qadha of it afterwards. Kaffarah is not obligatory in this situation. (Ilmul Fiqh p.41 v.3)
