Question:

Nowadays I have been getting lots of waswas from shaytan. But I don’t know how to ignore them. That’s why I try to get Ilm to fight these waswas.

I have a washing machine in which I put impure clothes (sometimes with urine from kids and stuff) and make sure I rinse it thrice. But recently I started noticed that when the tub is filling and it doing its washing cycle it splashes water (impure because mixed with impure clothes) goes all over the tub walls where water doesn’t reach. Then later it drains and spins which causes the walls to shed those splashes and some remains.

Then again it fills up for second rinse cycle causing to splash water and then spins. And then same thing happen some splashes go away and some stay. And then it fills for third cycle. I get doubts what if these splashes go back in clothes while its spinning. I know many people don’t worry about these things and it makes me feel I’m going crazy what should I do. After all cycles finished I felt its still not clean.

Answer:

Firstly, by washing a soiled garment thrice (or less, so long as the impurity is removed), a garment will be considered pure even if a stain remains. The water dripping off of the garment will also be considered pure. Therefore, by rinsing the soiled garments beforehand, all the garments in the washing machine will be ritually pure before, during, and after utilizing the washing machine. There is no need to be concerned regarding water mixing or splashing in this circumstance.

Secondly, while pre-rinsing soiled garments is the better and more cautious approach, it is usually not necessary when using the washing machine. A washing machine on a normal washing cycle achieves the aim of removing the impurity by pouring water, agitating the clothing, spinning the clothing to remove the water and then rinsing. Therefore, any dirty clothes washed in a washing machine would be considered pure. In many cases, the selected washing machine program runs through three or more cycles, much like the requirements of the preferred method.

All the other garments which accompanied the soiled garment in the washing machine would also be considered pure, as they were washed and rinsed by the washing machine. Also, the detergents used in the washing machine (also known as surfactants) bind to dirt, which suspends the dirt in the water and prevents it from spreading. The dirty water is then rinsed away with fresh water, leaving clean clothes.

In general, it seems that your worries over purity have reached a level of excessive concern. When someone is plagued by doubts such as these, to the extent that they affect one’s life and worship, it is necessary for them to learn to put these doubts aside and stop thinking about them. If something is known to have been pure, one must assume it continues to be pure until it is proven otherwise in a certain manner. Remember that purity is a practical standard for all Muslims in their daily lives, not an impossible goal which puts one into difficulty. One should ignore doubts and suspicions, especially if they plague you frequently. You may wish to consult a qualified Muslim mental health professional for help with managing your anxieties.
