Question:

What should the Imam do after the fardh salah?

Answer:

Bismillah

Those prayers which does not have sunnah prayers afterwards such as the Fajr and Asr prayer, the Imam has a choice of sitting on the right or on the left facing the followers. Both practices are established from ahadith and both views can be acted upon. It is preferable that one changes the direction of his sitting sometimes so people don’t assume one particular direction to be necessary. (Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p.134 v.4, Fatawa Mahmoodiyah p.126 v.2, Aapke Massail, p.252 v.2 & Fatawa Rahimiyah p.35 v.3)

However, those prayers which do have sunnah’s afterwards such as Zuhr, Magrib and Ishaa then it is preferable that the Imam makes a short dua so that everybody can begin their sunnah’s promptly. The same ruling will also apply if he intends to read his sunnah prayers at home. (Masail Namaz p.155)
