Question:
What is the safar, who is musafir?
Does the purpose of travel affect dispensations for mussafir in the Hanafi madhhab?
Answer:
The majority of scholars agree that the minimum required distance for a person to be considered a Musaafir is 4 Burud which is equivalent to 16 Farsakh or 48 (Shariah Miles) or 88 Kilometres or 55 English miles. (Raddul Muhtar p.725 v.2)
The Prophet of Allah used to designate a day and a night journey as travel and Saaiduna Ibn Abbas and Saaiduna Ibn Umar used to shorten the prayer and open their fast at a journey of 4 Burd and it was 16 Farsakh. (Sahih Bukhari p.147 v.1)
When a person becomes a Musafir it is obligatory upon him to pray two rakats for Zuhr, Asr and Isha and also there is the option of not to fast in the month of Ramadhan.
