Question:

What is the safar, who is musafir?
Does the purpose of travel affect dispensations for mussafir in the Hanafi madhhab?

Answer:

Bismillah

The majority of scholars agree that the minimum required distance for a person to be considered a Musaafir is 4 Burud which is equivalent to 16 Farsakh or 48 (Shariah Miles) or 88 Kilometres or 55 English miles. (Raddul Muhtar p.725 v.2)

The Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) used to designate a day and a night journey as travel and Saaiduna Ibn Abbas raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) and Saaiduna Ibn Umar raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) used to shorten the prayer and open their fast at a journey of 4 Burd and it was 16 Farsakh. (Sahih Bukhari p.147 v.1)

When a person becomes a Musafir it is obligatory upon him to pray two rakats for Zuhr, Asr and Isha and also there is the option of not to fast in the month of Ramadhan.
