Zina of the eyes

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “Allah has written the very portion of zina which a man may indulge in. There will be no escape from it.  The zina of the eye is the lustful look, the zina of the ears is the listening, the zina of the tongue is the speech, the zina of the hand is the grip, the zina of the feet is the walking (to the place to commit zina), the heart yearns and desires and the private parts approve all that or disprove it.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Sin is the name of an act, which is against the command, and the will of Allah. Starting from this point, you will be able to see that sins we call minor is in fact no minor sin as to disobey Allah and to oppose His will is in fact a grave crime. Therefore, based on this view a large number of scholars have ruled that every disobedience of Allah is a major sin. It is in the sense that Saaiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu has said: “Any Act forbidden by the Shariah is a major sin.”

A sin which is technically known as minor does not mean that people should go about indulging in it neglectfully as sin done with nerve or heedlessness, does not remain minor anymore-it becomes major. However, it is necessary that there be a method to distinguish between sins in terms of corruption they cause, evil results they bring and harmful outcomes they produce.

Major sins is a sin on which hadd or punishment has been prescribed in the Holy Qur’an or Sunnah to be enforced in this present life on which words of curse or lanah have appeared, or on which stern or warning of hell has been mentioned are all major sins.

Minor sins on the other hand are those actions, which displease Allah SWA, and as mentioned above the continuous committing of minor sins can lead to a major sin or will become a major sin. (Maariful Qur’an p.405-p.410 v.2)

Looking at an unlawful woman is a minor sin but continuously committing a minor sin can lead to it being a major.
