Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah!

If a person said talaq three times, is that talaq valid in Islam?

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Answer:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh,

If by triple talaaq you mean saying the words of talaaq thrice then a person who repeats the words of Talaaq 3 times whether he has done so consecutively in one sitting or over a period of time, such as one Talaaq every month, the Talaaq is valid and one’s wife will have received a Mughallaz Talaaq.[1]

A Talaaq Mughallaz is such that one's wife becomes permanently Haraam upon oneself unless the Halaalah process takes place.[2] Halaalah includes marriage with another man which is followed by intimate relationship and a divorce or death of the husband thereafter she may marry her previous husband with the completion of her iddah.

Doing so — repeating the words of Talaaq thrice in one sitting — is detestable and amounts to sin, however the Talaaq will still be valid.
