Question:

Assalamu Alaikum, I am 16 and will be forced by parents attend a mehndi event where there will be qawwali with musical instruments and free mixing.

Is it permissible for me to attend or will I at least not be sinful due to parental pressure? Please advise according to Quran/Sunnah and scholarly opinion.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The Prophet ﷺ has said: “There is no obedience to any human being if it involves disobedience to Allah.” (Ahmad) [1]

One should always keep in mind that there is no obedience to the creation when it concerns disobedience to Allah ﷻ. When a person is aware that impermissible activities are taking place at a generic event they have been invited to, if they are a person of influence, they must decline as attending will result in endorsing their activities. If an individual is not a person of influence, they should still avoid the gathering. However, if they are unable to do so, there is no harm in simply eating at the event and then taking their leave, avoiding the areas where sin takes place when they can. They should also aim to prevent these activities from taking place at the event if they are able to.[2]

Whilst it may cause dissatisfaction for your family and relatives, obeying Allah ﷻ has greater priority. Instead, gently explain the purpose of the prohibition, as well as discussing alternatives. Have trust in Allah ﷻ and make abundant du’a for ease and relief from the situation you are in.

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.” Surah Al-Isra’ (17:23) [3]

Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
