Does Swallowing A Miswak Bristle Break The Fast?

Fatwa ID: 09280

Question:

Any Fatāwā pertaining to swallowing the bristles of a Miswāk whilst fasting?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Swallowing the natural moisture or taste that comes from the Miswak does not break the fast, as this moisture is considered part of the Miswak itself and cannot really be separated from it. [1]

However, swallowing actual bristles of the Miswak will break the fast, because the bristles are a visible substance entering the stomach. [2]

Since it is normally easy to avoid swallowing Miswak bristles, a person will not be excused if a bristle is swallowed. Therefore, if someone swallows a Miswak bristle while fasting, the fast will break.

Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
