Question:
I have a specific question for you. It’s about Easter. My husband and I are discussing how we should handle it. Our families celebrate this holiday, and of course there’s also the Easter bunny, an Easter egg hunt in the garden, and gifts. We’re not really that enthusiastic about it. One should keep a distance from rituals of other religions. But especially my parents are very excited about bringing joy to their grandchildren with this.
Easter is on Sunday, and my brother also has his birthday. He invited us to a brunch, which wouldn’t be a problem for us. However, there will still be an Easter egg hunt in the garden for my brother’s daughter (2 years old) and my son. My husband sees this very critically. Personally, I’m more relaxed about it. My son is a child, and for him it’s really just fun. We’re not praying to Jesus or attaching any particular intention to it… what do you think?

Answer:
Whilst it is important to maintain ties with your Christian family, you do not need to join them in their un-Islamic traditions to maintain strong ties. Thus, you should not attend any gatherings in which there is an Easter egg hunt or other un-Islamic religious traditions. Your child may be young, but exposing him to such un-Islamic traditions from an early age will desensitise him towards such false practices.
You may request that your family have lunch without the Easter egg hunt and without other Christian traditions. In this case, you may attend the gathering. If they insist on having an Easter egg hunt and will be offended if you do not attend, you may stay for lunch and leave before the Easter egg hunt. If the Easter egg hunt will take place alongside the lunch, you should not attend the event at all and seek other ways to maintain strong ties with your Christian family without compromising your beliefs and principles.
In conclusion, when a person like you embraces Islam by the mercy of Allah Ta’ala, one must free oneself of all types of un-Islamic beliefs and practices. Thus, you may attend the lunch if no un-Islamic themes are attached to it. Otherwise, you must denounce such traditions by not attending the gathering. May Allah Ta’ala guide your family to Islam. Ameen.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
