Answer:
Salman the Persian was amongst the learned and experienced amongst them. He was born in Isfahan, Iran, and was introduced to Christianity by a caravan of Syrian traders. He was greatly impressed by their prayer and his journey to find the truth began. He spent many years in the company of monks and scholars of the people of the book and eventually ended up in Madina where he embraced Islam at the hands of the prophet (s.a.w.).
The narration in question is actually a letter correspondence between Salman and Abu Dardaa (r.a.). Imam Malik (r.a.) has recorded it in his Hadith compilation Al Muwatta, under the chapter of Al Wassiyya (wills /advice).[1]
