Question:

Asalamualaikum I have in the past paid for Muslims to watch movies that showed Thor (god of thunder), superman and magic containing movies fiction superheroes etc. and we sat and enjoyed them, is this kufr making me and the ones who watched these movies kaffir as we enjoyed them. how do I repent do I also need to inform the Muslims I took with me that this is kufr will I be held accountable for them not knowing about the kufr involved in enjoying watching superheroes and movies with magic in them as they may continue this action until death will this then be my sin as I took them to the movies and paid for their tickets?

Answer:

It should also be understood that watching films, series and etc. are all things which are strictly prohibited in Islam. The reason for this is as follows,

“And from among the people, there is he who buys the distracting amusement of things, so that he, being devoid of knowledge, may mislead (people) from the Way of Allāh and make a mockery of it. Such people are the ones for whom there is a disgraceful punishment.” [Surah Luqmān, 31;6] [1]

Any activity which takes us away from the path of Allāh Ta’ālā or distracts us from His worship would be considered impermissible. Films, series and etc. all have this effect. They are of no sound benefit, neither educational nor otherwise. They bring about no benefit and squander time which could have otherwise been spent in more beneficial ways. Many times, there is impermissible music being listened to, inappropriate images being viewed, people mixing freely and countless other Harām things taking place.

Only through sincere repentance and Taubah can one truly atone for their sins. Thus, the first step in this recourse would be to do Taubah and repent to Allāh Ta’ālā. There are three conditions for repenting. First of all; one must stop committing the sin; secondly, feel remorse for the sin which you have been committing; and thirdly, make a sincere vow to never return back to the sin.

There is also a fourth condition which pertains to when one has wronged another which would apply in this case. You unknowingly have become the source of their sin, so you should also seek their forgiveness and advise them to do Taubah.

I would highly urge you to find alternative ways to spend your free time which would be of benefit to you in both worlds. For instance; praying, reciting Qur’ān, reading books, doing Zikr and etc.
