Question:

I’ve heard people mention that Saying jumuah mubarak is a bidah

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There is no basis in Shariah for greeting one another with Jumuah Mubarak on the day of Jumuah. “Jumuah Mubarak“has only been introduced recently in society and is fast becoming an ingrained custom circulated around in the form of WhatsApp, SMS and other methods. In fact, to regard it as Sunnah or an integral part of Jumu’ah could result in it becoming a bid’ah and a person will be obliged to stop it.

Jumua’h is indeed a Mubārak (blessed) day.  This is understood from the many Ahādīth expounding on the virtues of a Friday.

A believer is also fortunate and blessed to be alive on a Friday to witness the Barakah and blessings of a Friday.  When one congratulates others with Jumua’h Mubārak, this is an expression of reality.  However, there is no mention in the Hadīth about Rasūlullāh Sallallāhu Alaihi Wa Sallam and Sahābah congratulating each other with Jumua’h Mubārak.  Hence, one may congratulate others with Jumua’h Mubārak on condition it is not regarded to be a Sunnah or necessary.

Although the words ‘Jumuʿah Mubārak’ (Blessed Friday) are not words taken from an established practice of the Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings upon him), it would be permissible to say them with the following three conditions:

• One does not believe or intend it to be an established sunnah (prophetic practice).

• One does not believe it to be binding upon a person.

• One does not look down upon someone not articulating the statement.

An action or practice that is good, and not in apparent contradiction to any teachings of the Qurʿān and the noble Sunnah, is considered “mubāḥ” (allowed), provided one has the correct intention (as stated in the above 3 conditions).

Therefore, Saying Jummah Mubarak in principle is permissible, however, if someone thinks it to be necessary or that it is an established Sunnah of Friday, then it will become a bidah.

NOTE: If a person fulfils the etiquettes and sunnats of a Friday as advised by Rasulullah صلي الله عليه وسلم such a person is blessed. There is no point in confining the congratulation of Jumua’h Mubarak to verbal utterance without deriving the barakat and blessings of Jumua’h for himself and encouraging others to do so.

Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
