Answer:
As dutiful Muslims, it is vital that the importance of Halal earnings is grasped. The Shariah law has laid out that which one may deal with and that which is impermissible to deal with.
Allah SWT says:
“Eat of what is lawful and pure in the earth, and do not follow in Satan’s steps.” (1)
The words ‘Eat of what is lawful’ pertains to consuming good and halal wealth.
Why must our earnings be pure?
Our wealth assists in our sustenance, provision and our consumption. If the root of our wealth is Haram, then that which follows will be evil.
It is stated in Hadith:
‘Abdallah b. Mas’ud reported God’s Messenger as saying, “Trying to earn a lawful livelihood is an obligatory duty in addition to the duties which are obligatory.” (2)
To work a role or job that involves something impermissible or leads to an impermissible act would be assisting in sin.
Allah SWT insists and commands we do not aid in sin:
Help each other in righteousness and piety, and do not help each other in sin and aggression. Fear Allah. Surely, Allah is severe at punishment. (3)
Thus, it is not permissible for one to commit to a job that assists in sin and alcohol is not permissible. (4)
Therefore, though a fashion designer is not an impermissible job in itself, the job entails sin and so, the job will not be appropriate.
Only Allah knows best
