Question:
Can a man use or wear garments made from artificial silk, not directly from the silkworm?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Al-Khudree ( رضى الله عنه ) narrated that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) of Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) said:
أُحِلَّ الذَّهَبُ وَالْحَرِيرُ لإِنَاثِ أُمَّتِي وَحُرِّمَ عَلَى ذُكُورِهَا ”
“Wearing of silk and gold has been made unlawful for males and lawful for the females of my Ummah”.1
Likewise, Sayyiduna Anas Bin Malik ( رضى الله عنه ) narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said;
مَنْ لَبِسَ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَلَنْ يَلْبَسَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ
“Whoever wears silk in this world, shall not wear it in the Hereafter”.2
Therefore, the wearing of silk is permissible for women and prohibited for men. 3
However, if the content of the silk of a garment is less than half in comparison to the other materials, then it will be permissible to wear the garment without any detestability.4
In the aforementioned, males are permitted to use artificially manufactured or synthetic silk.
Only Allah knows best.
