Question:
Can we lift our eyelashes?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Lifting eyelashes involves the use of a cream or substance which makes the eyelashes stretch upwards to give the impression that they are longer. In essence, this falls under non-invasive beautification and is permissible if it is done for the husband, just like straightening the hair. It should not be done with the intention of showing one’s beauty to strange men; that is a sin.
However, keep the following details in mind:
- If this substance allows water to permeate (and is water-based), then wudhu and ghusl will be valid with it because water will get to the skin around the eyelashes[1].
- If this substance does not allow water to permeate (and is oil-based), then the wudhu and ghusl will not be valid because water cannot get to the skin, and therefore this type of lift should be avoided.
- It is often advised that the eyelashes should not be wet for 24 hours after the treatment. This means that a lady will not be able to do her wudhu or pray. Unless she is on her period, it is not permissible for her to miss her prayers due to cosmetic reasons.
