Hair extensions and the issue of performing masah and washing over it for ghusl

CategoriesWomen's Issues [292]

Is it permissible for a man to have hair extension (hair attached to existing hair) to increase density/length? If yes to above, if the wig/hair piece is fixed to scalp using adhesive, would the ghusal/wudu be valid, as the water may not touch ALL parts of the scalp, due to glue resin etc?

Answer

With regards to your question it will be permissible for men to have hair extensions as long as ones natural hair or synthetic fibres are being used. However, it should be borne in mind that if the hair extension entails joining human hair to one’s hair, then this would be impermissible in Islam, as it involves deception and using a part of the human body, both of which are unlawful. (Fatawa Hindiyyah p.358 v.5)

Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said:

“Allah has cursed the woman who joins (her or someone else’s) hair (with the hair of another man or a woman) and the woman who asks for her hair to be joined (with the hair of another person) and the one who tattoos (herself or someone else) and the one asks to get tattooed.” (Sahih Bukhari p.879 v.2)

Finally, if the wig or hairpiece is fitted to the hair or body in a way that it is not detachable, then it will be permitted to wipe over the wig when performing wudhu and ghusl will also be valid as well. However, if the wig or hairpiece can be removed, then one will have to remove it when performing wudhu or ghusl. (Takmila Fath Mulhim p.191 v.4)
