Question

If my elder, ask me to bring tobacco which we know is haram. Is it haram for me to buy it for them? If it is, how should I deal with them.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Indeed, there is no obedience in the disobedience of Allah ﷻ.

Allah ﷻ says: “If they try to force you to set up any idols beside Me, do not obey them. But continue to treat them amicably in this world.” (Surah Luqmān, v15)

Ali reported God’s Messenger as saying, “No obedience is to be given in the case of an act of disobedience to Allah, obedience is to be given only regarding what is reputable (and good).” (Mishkat al-Masabih, 3665)

So, you should not abide by a request or command when it will lead you to disobey to Allah ﷻ.

It is narrated by ʿAli bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah is Kind and loves kindness, and He rewards for kindness in a way that He does not reward for harshness.” (Musnad Ahmad, 902)

Another Ḥadīth reported by Amr bin Shu’aib who narrates from his father, from his grandfather, who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “He is not one of us who does not have mercy upon our young, nor knows the honor of our elders.” (Tirmidhi, 1920)

We kindly advise you to decline your elder’s request with due respect and with politeness in shā Allah.

We pray Allah ﷻ to accept your endeavor and keep you steadfast in your Deen. Āmīn
