Question:

A brother in Islam suggested that there is no evidence from the Qur’ān or sunnah that the Qur’ān abrogated the former scriptures. He said the Qur’ān only has inter-abrogation. Is this true, or is there evidence that suggests otherwise?

Answer:

All previously revealed books are abrogated by Islam and the Qur’ān. See below references. – (See: Al-Ḥāwī Al-Kabīr, Vol 9, Page 220, Dār Al-Kutub Al-Ilmīyyah)1

“We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the scripture and as a criterion over it.” – (Qur’ān 5:48)2

“Whoever chooses other than Islam as a religion, never will it be accepted from them, and they, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.” – (Qur’ān 3:85)3

Abū Hurayra (may Allāh be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allāh (peace and blessings be upon him) stated, “By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muḥammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm their belief in that with which I have been sent, and dies in this state [of disbelief], they shall be among the occupants of Hell-Fire.” – (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 153)4

‘Omar (may Allāh be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, “We hear from Jews, traditions which charm us, so do you think we should write down some of them?” He replied, “Are you in a state of confusion as the Jews and Christians were? I have brought Allāh’s teachings to you pure and unadulterated. Even if Moses were alive there would be no option for him but to follow me [and the Qur’ān].” – (Bayhaqī 174)5
