Question:
A friend of mine confessed a dark sin he committed with his wife recently. The wife is currently making up for fasts she missed in Ramadan due to pregnancy. Her husband wanted to fulfill his sexual desire one day and deceived his wife into breaking the fast. He told her, she is allowed to retract her intention for fast because the zawal is hours away. She fell for it, and thus beaked her fast. In the aftermath, he realized he’s committed a grave, and heinous sin, but he is concerned is the penalty/conditions of kaffarah now also wajib upon his wife for breaking a fardh fast?
In the name of Allah the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Answer
The wife will only be obliged to do qadha of the fast broken and there is no need to do the kaffarah. Kaffarah is only obligatory when one breaks the Ramadhan fast intentionally by eating, drinking, or engaging in intercourse. Kaffarah is not obligatory by breaking nafl or qadha fasts.
