Question:
Assalamualaikum, Is selling Saree permissible according to Hanbali and Maliki school of thought? Saree is a traditional dress worn in India by women. Is the business of it halal? Please answer as soon as possible.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
A saree is a traditional garment from South Asia worn in various styles throughout India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It is not specific to a particular subgroup or religion, and though it can be worn in a manner that exposes the midriff, it can also be worn in a way that is modest and that covers the whole body. Just like with other clothes, this is the choice of the wearer whether to have short sleeves, a short blouse or to drape it in a way that exposes the skin and shape of the body.
All schools of thought agree that clothing is by default a halal business unless there is another factor added which may make it haram. For example what would not be allowed is selling something which is an emblem of another religion such as a kippah, clerical collar or a crucifixion necklace, nor something which you know will definitely be used for haram, such as revealing clothes to somebody you know will wear it in front of non-mahrams. However, if you are unsure then by default such a trade will be permissible.
