Question
Is the kurta closer to the sunnah dress?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer
The following information has been taken from Hadhrat Shaikhul Hadith Maulana Muhammad Zakariya (RA) book “Turban, Kurta, and Topee”.
Saaidah Umme Salma Radiallahu Anha narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam preferred the Kurta over all other types of clothing. (Sunan Tirmizi p.306 v.1 & Shamaail Tirmizi p.5)
Saaiduna Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu reports that lengthwise, the Kurta of the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam would be above his ankles while the sleeves would reach up to his fingers. Allama Munawi writes in his commentary of this Hadith that it is learnt from the coupling of another narration with this one that "Above the Ankles" means the middle of the calf (halfway between the ankles and knees), just as it has been reported in one narration. (Faizul Qadeer p.173 v.5)
Ata says that Saaiduna Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf Radiallahu Anhu wore a cotton Kurta which reached the middle of his calves. His body sheet reached his waist. (Tabraani)
Abdullah Ibn Abi Huzail (RA) says that he saw Saaiduna Ali Radiallahu Anhu wearing a "Razi" (reference to its origin) Kurta. The length of it was upto the middle of his calves. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaibah p.211 v.8)
From the aforementioned discussion, we can say that the kurta which comes up to the middle of the claves is closer to the sunnah.
