Month of Safar
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Answer
Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said “There is no Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed), nor is there any bad omen, nor is there any Haamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar and one should run away from the leper as one runs away from a lion.” (Mishkaatul Masaabeeb p.391)
Some people believe that the month of Safar is an unlucky month and difficulties and anxieties befall in this month. The above hadith proves that there are no such things and during month of Safar, like any other month, good and bad may be decreed. (Mazahirul Haqq p.293 v.5)
Mufti Taqi Usmani (DB) has written the following regarding the month of Safar:
“Safar is the second month in the Islamic calendar. It is one of the ‘Al-Ashhur-al-Hurum’, the four sanctified months in which battle was prohibited in the days of the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam. However, no specific mode of worship or other special rules are set by the Shariah to observe in this month.
Some people believe that this month is an unlucky month and therefore avoid marriage ceremonies or any other happy gatherings in this month. This belief is totally baseless and it is a part of the superstitions rampant in the ignorant of Arabia before the advent of Islam.” (Islamic Months p.23)
