Question:

My question is regarding the heart. What is sealed heart and can it be reversed and is there such a thing as an irreversible sealing of the heart? Also is a dead heart the same as a sealed heart. If a persons heart is sealed and he wants the help of Allah SWT and the mercy of Allah SWT, Majestic is He, to unseal his heart and to become a sincere true slave of Allah SWT what should be do.

Answer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

A sealed heart in the context of the verse, "As for the unbelievers, it is the same whether or not you forewarn them; they will not have faith. God has set a seal upon their hearts and ears; their sight is dimmed and grievous punishment awaits them." (Surah 2 verses 6 and 7), refers to non-beleivers and naturally if a seal is from Allah Ta’ala then there is not much we can do besides duaa. “verily, we guide” and “verily, you cannot guide whomsoever you will but it is Allah Ta’ala who guides”

We as human beings cannot know whos heart is sealed and whos heart is is not sealed, it may be that guidance is not written yet for a certain person.

In regards to Muslims in numerous ahaadeeth it is mentioned that sinful muslims have blackened hearts.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, when the servant commits a sin a black spot appears upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart will be polished. If he returns to the sin, the blackness will be increased until it overcomes his heart. It is the covering that Allah has mentioned: No, but on their hearts is a covering because of what they have earned.” (83:14) Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3334.

When we do any good deed the black spots decrease and decrease until its easier to do good and difficult to do bad. One Must start off by fulfilling the obligatory and abstaining from Haram and work their way up from there.
