Question:

When giving the iqamat, should one wait for the imam to stand on the Jai namaz, give it before he stands there, or he can give it before Imam even enters Masjid?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There is a number of scenarios regarding the followers (Muqtadis) standing up for the Imam to lead the congregational Salah.

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah ( رضى الله عنه ) the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said;

‘If the Iqama is pronounced, then do not stand for the prayer till you see me (in front of you) and do it calmly”. 1

Hence, if the Imam enters the Masjid from the front, then the followers will stand as soon as they see the Imam.2

If the Imam enters the Masjid from the rear, the Muqtadis of each row will stand as the Imam passes by their row.3

However, it is disliked for the Muqtadis to stand prior to the Imam’s arrival.4

If the Imam is in the Masjid alongside the Muqtadis, then they can stand when the Muazzin says

Nevertheless, this does not mean that the Muqtadis should not stand before that as it will enable the straightening of the rows, which is of paramount importance in Islam, and it will also make it easy to commence the Salah immediately after the Iqamah.

The majority of the Ulama are of the view that there is no restriction to the time for standing up for the Iqamah.

However, it is Mustahab to stand when the Muazzin starts the Iqamah.

Sayyiduna Anas ( رضى الله عنه ) would stand up when the Muazzin would say قد قامَت الصَّلاة and the Imam has begun the Salah.

It has been recorded from Saeed Bin Al-Musayyib ( رحمه الله ) and Umar Bin Abdul Aziz ( رحمه الله ) that it is necessary to stand up when the Muazzin says الله إكبر and when the Muazzin says حَيّ على الصَّلاة the lines should be straightened, and when he says لا إلَه إلّا الله the Imam should start the Salah.

However, the general view is that the Imam would not say the Takbeer until the Muazzin has completed the Iqamah. 6
