Question:

If the urination continues such that it encompasses an area of more than a dirham (2.75 cm in diameter) or more then the person will have to pass water over the area until it is removed in which hadeeth the prophet said it shouldn’t be more than 2.75 or it is your personal opinion because I am not satisfied without authentic hadeeth please provide a reference of authentic hadeeth

Answer:

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ passed by one of the gardens of Makkah or Al-Madinah and heard the sound of two men being tormented in their graves. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “They are being punished. However, they are not being punished for anything that was difficult to avoid.” Then He ﷺ said: “Indeed, one of them did not use to take care to avoid getting urine on his body or clothes, and the other used to walk around spreading gossip.” Then He called for a palm stalk which He broke in two and placed a piece of it on each grave. It was then said to Him: “O Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, why did you do that?” He ﷺ said: “May (the punishment) be reduced for them so long as this does not dry out” or: “until this dries out.” [Sunan An-Nasā’i; Hadith 2068] [1]

Allāh Ta’ālā commands, “purify your clothes.” [Surah Al-Mudath’thir; 74:4] [2]

Any impurity which comes onto the body or clothes must be washed off and cleaned as soon as possible. Cleanliness is a crucial part of our beliefs. There are numerous narrations emphasizing the extreme importance of keeping the body and our clothes clean at all times. The Hadith above is only one example showing the severity for the one who is careless in this regard. Any amount small or big should be washed and cleaned.

Many measures can be taken to ensure that no excess drops exit the urethra after completing urination. For instance; the index and middle fingers of the left hand can be placed under the scrotum and then gentle pressure applied in a dragging motion forward towards the scrotum. This will allow any remaining drops to exit. A piece of tissue can also be held on the tip and gently squeezed with the left hand to bring out any remaining drops. Alternatively, one can try coughing or holding a piece of tissue on the tip and taking 40 steps within the confines of the toilet. All these measures can be taken prior to pouring water.

Due to the potential difficulty that this may cause, a slight allowance has been provided. This allowance is what you have enquired about. It must be emphasised, that even with this allowance being there, the preferred and recommended step is to wash away the impurities. If drops of urine still exit after all of these measures have been taken then; if the amount of urine exiting is below the size of a Dirham then it will be Makrooh to perform Salah in this state but the Salah will be complete. Anything in excess of this amount will nullify one’s Salah and cleaning/washing will be required before the Salah is performed.

Dirham and Dinar were the currency of the time. They were gold and silver coins. The approximate equivalent to a Dirham today would be a 50p coin. Coins of that time were not like the coins of today, where every coin is minted in an identical manner to the next. Coins use to vary in size, thickness, purity and etc. Hence, there are slight variations in the sizes. Thus, the 50p coin is a sufficient equivalent for us to base this amount on.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “When any of you goes to relieve himself, he should take with him three stones to cleans himself, for they will be enough for him.” [Sunan Abi Dawood; Hadith 40] [3]

From this narration, we understand that the use of water is not compulsory. However, it is the most preferred method as it is the best way to remove the impurities after one has had a bowel movement or urinated. Excluding many other factors, this Hadith implies that the use of three stones alone is sufficient to consider oneself clean and whatever dirt remains would be disregarded.

The value of the dirham and what is below it of heavy Najāsa (impurities); such as blood, urine, wine, chicken droppings, and donkey urine- it is permissible to pray with them, and if it exceeds this amount, then it is not permissible to pray with them. [Al-Hidāyah; volume 1, page 71] [4]

This is the view of the Hanafi school and it is also the agreed-upon view of the remaining three schools.
