Wages for teaching the Holy Quran
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Answer
Imam Malik (RA), Imam Shafi (RA) and Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal (RA) were of the view that taking wages for teaching the Holy Quran is permissible while Imam Abu Hanifah (RA) considered it impermissible. This was the opinion during the era of these blessed scholars. However, since then circumstances have changed. Those who taught the Holy Quran used to receive an allowance from the Baitaul Maal.
However, as there is no Baitul Maal in this day and age and teaching the Holy Quran to children is a full time responsibility, teachers could not turn to worldly professions without it affecting the children’s education. In view of this situation, the later day Hanafi Jurists permitted teachers in accepting wages for the teaching of the Holy Quran. Upon this view the fatwa is given.
