Question:
Asalaamu alaikum,
Would working in a customer advisor role for the civil service, specifically in the benefits and credits department (hmrc) be considered haram? As far as I am aware there is no interest related tasks.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
HMRC is the UK’s government tax collection agency. It is permissible for a government to collect tax from its citizens. [1]
HMRC’s Benefits and Credits division exists mainly to administer Tax Credit matters such as finalisations, overpayments, appeals, disputes, and customer support.
If there are no Haram elements to your work, such as interest related tasks, it will be permissible for you to work for this government agency.[2]
May Allah Ta’ala grant you success in this life and the hereafter through your Halal earnings.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
