Question:
What’s the ruling on nicotine gum?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
With regards to your question, nicotine gum is not the same as smoking because it does not involve inhaling smoke, and it does not directly cause intoxication. However, since it contains nicotine, which is harmful and addictive, its ruling depends on how it is used. If a person uses nicotine gum to help stop smoking or on medical advice, then it is allowed because it is being used as a treatment to remove harm. But if someone uses it without need, just for enjoyment or in a way that causes addiction or harm, then it is not allowed or at least strongly disliked, because Islam teaches that harm should be avoided.
