Question

I have a follow-up question, regarding the “Ameen” that followers say when the Imam reads Qunut. Should we say “Ameen” softly or should we only say it in the heart in the Qunut of Fajr? And what about when the imam reads Qunut-e-Naazila?

Answer

As I mentioned before in an earlier answer that according to the Hanafi Fiqh Qunut in Fajr Salah is considered to be abrogated, thus, a person should not raise his hands to make dua during the Qunut of the Fajr Salah and one should remain silent without saying Ameen with his hands on his sides. If the person participated in it then such an action will be considered disliked, but will not render the Salah to be invalid. (Hidayah p.145 v.1 & Fatawa Mahmoodiyah p.370 v.6)

However, in Qunut Nazilah which is recited when some calamity or affliction strikes the Muslim, one should say the Ameen quietly. There is a difference whether one raises one’s hands or not. According to Imam Abu Yusuf, one should keep his arms folded whereas Imam Muhammad is of the view that one should leave his hands on the side. (Fatawa Rahimiyah p.22 v.6)
