What is the ruling of Sudafex medicine?
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Majority of the scholars agree that if a person is suffering from a severe illness and he has the financial ability to pay for the treatment, then to treat himself through medicines or other sources becomes wajib upon him. However, if the illness is not serious and he does not have the financial ability then to treat himself does not become wajib. It only becomes mustahub. (Nizamul Fatawa P.350 V.1)
Wherever possible the cure should be done with paak and hallal animals. However, sometimes in necessity, the only alternative for a certain illness is through a particular medicine, which have impure and unlawful substances.
There are two possible strands:
- To use it without necessity
- To use it in necessity.
Regarding the first possible strand, the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said that Allah (SWA) has placed no cure for the Muslims in haraam. (Mishkaatul Masaabeeh P.388 V.2)
In another hadith it is stated that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has prohibited us from impure and filthy medicines. (Mishkaatul Masaabeeh P388 V.2)
However, later day jurists, keeping in mind the modern day impure medicines and the weakness of people against it have given permission in the usage of haraam medicine on the condition that another lawful and pure medicine is not effective or is not available. (Maariful Quran P.437 V.1)
The second possible situation is to use it in necessity. A person whose life is in danger can use such medicines, which are forbidden on him to save his life on the following conditions:
- There is extreme necessity that one’s life is in danger.
- Another lawful medicine does not work, or is not available.
- It should be certain that the disease would be cured through the medicine.
- A person should not enjoy the medicine.
- Only the amount, which is necessary, should be used.

From the aforementioned information we can deduce that the usage of Sudafex as a medicine is permissible, even though it may have unlawful substances, as long as another lawful or effective medicine is not found or readily available it will be permissible to use.
If a particular medicine has more side effects than the benefits it does not make the medicine unlawful. For sure one should refrain from using such medicines but the side effects, which are written on the packet, cannot render the product to be unlawful. The reason being is that the side effect occurring is not definitive. Many people use different kinds of medication daily and very few of them suffer from the side effects.
However, the issue here is that one is using a lawful medicine for another benefit which is to reduce fat, thus the ruling will be different. As reducing fat is not a form of medication then it will be Makruh (detestable) for you to use Sudafex.
In regards to the selling of this medicine, the jurists have said that it will permissible as this medicine can be used for hallal things. A comparison of this can be drawn with TV’s and videos which can be used in a permissible manner as well as in a prohibited way. (Raddul Muhtar p.250 v.5 & Jadeed Fiqhi Masaail p.386 v.1)
Finally, as one is required to have a pharmaceutical license in order to sell such products, it will not be permissible for you to continue selling this product. To obey the law of the country is necessary upon every Muslim. This according to the Shariah is considered as a trust and to break it is unlawful.
Allah (SWA) in the Holy Quran has said:
“And fulfil (every) engagement, for engagement will be enquired into (on the Day of Judgement).” (Surah Bani Israeel v.34)
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: When he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is given a trust he breaches it.” (Sahih Bukhari p.10 v.1)
