Question:
I plan to study Industrial and Production Engineering In Sha Allah. I read that subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics may contain kufr. I never thought this before. My question is if a person studies these subjects because they are required in engineering, and some ideas might be kufr but he cannot identify them due to lack of knowledge, will he become a kafir? If he tries to ask scholars about everything, they may answer late and he could fail exams. What should he do?

Answer:
Providing that you don’t believe in whatever you are studying to be true, and it does not affect your imaan in the long run, it would not lead to kufr but would be undesirable.
It would be highly advisable to learn and have proper grounding in your deen and Islamic beliefs so as not to fall into doubts and not to believe in what you are studying to be the absolute truth over deen.

عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَبِي حَفْصٍ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ:
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ: ” إنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى، فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ فَهِجْرَتُهُ إلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا فَهِجْرَتُهُ إلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إلَيْهِ”.
الْقَصَصُ الْمَكْرُوهُ أَنْ يُحَدِّثَهُمْ بِمَا لَيْسَ لَهُ أَصْلٌ مَعْرُوفٌ أَوْ يَعِظَهُمْ بِمَا لَا يُتَّعَظُ بِهِ أَوْ يَزِيدَ وَيُنْقِصَ يَعْنِي فِي أَصْلِهِ، أَمَّا لِلتَّزَيُّنِ بِالْعِبَارَاتِ اللَّطِيفَةِ الْمُرَقَّقَةِ وَالشَّرْحِ لِفَوَائِدِهِ فَذَلِكَ حَسَنٌ. (الدر المختار ج 6 ص 422)
