Answered by Mufti Sakib Shadman

Question:

Wanted to ask if one person is travelling and made intention to fast before fajr time began, and when waking up decided not to fast (before Al-Dahwah Al-Kubra) is kaffarah due upon him or just making up that one fast

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

If a Musafir makes an intention to fast and begins fasting, he must fulfill that intention and finish the fast. Breaking his fast prior to completion without any excuse would be sinful [1], however only Qadha will be due upon him, and not Kaffarah. [2]

Hence, please advise this brother that fasting is optional upon the Musafir. However if he begins a fast, he must complete it until the end. In any case, the brother simply needs to perform Qadha of the broken fast, and Kaffarah is not due upon him.

فالأصل عندنا أنه إذا صار في آخر النهار على صفة لو كان عليها في أول اليوم يباح له الفطر تسقط عنه الكفارة كذا في فتاوى قاضي خان.
