Question:
Does anyone have a write up about disability insurance?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In general, disability insurance, like all other forms of insurance, is impermissible. The Gharar in the time when one will be compensated for their payments [1], the Gharar in the amount they will receive in return, and the Riba that arises from the difference between the payments made and the payout received [2] all mean that almost all types of insurance are impermissible.
While insurance may be permitted if it is based on a permissible financial system such as Takaful, this is generally not the case for disability insurance. Thus, unless one is compelled to accept it by their employer [3], it will be impermissible for one to pay for disability insurance.
